> historic October 2006 storm

On the afternoon of October 12, 2006, a 'perfect' lake effect storm rolled into town. Continuing into the early hours of Friday the 13th, 22 inches of wet, heavy snow fell onto trees which still had their leaves, damaging an incredible number of trees and leaving hundreds of thousands of people powerless. The media have named it "the October Surprise"...I have really come to hate that name, so I won't use it. We were fortunate enough to not sustain any major losses from the storm, but were without power for an entire week. These photos were taken (mostly) by my father on Friday (the day after the storm) and during our cleanup on Saturday. Hover over thumbnails for description.

West view of the street Digging out before work on Friday, it took over 20 minutes to get out of the driveway The tree next door, which has since been marked for destruction I used to climb that tree when I was little...I'll be sad to see it go Branches tangled in the power, cable and phone lines
